National Green Building Standard (NGBS) Verification

Cain CAD provides compliance verification services for the National Green Building Standard (NGBS) certification, which is a voluntary residential green building certification program developed by the National Association of Home Builders (NAHB) and the International Code Council (ICC). It sets forth guidelines and criteria for designing, constructing, and renovating homes in an environmentally sustainable manner while promoting energy efficiency, water conservation, and indoor environmental quality.

To attain NGBS certification, residential projects must meet specific criteria across several categories, including:

  • Lot Design, Preparation, and Development: Emphasizing responsible land use, conservation of natural resources, and proper site development practices.
  • Resource Efficiency: Encouraging the use of sustainable building materials, waste reduction, and recycling practices throughout the construction process.
  • Energy Efficiency: Promoting the implementation of energy-efficient building systems, appliances, and renewable energy technologies to reduce energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions.
  • Water Efficiency: Emphasizing water conservation through the use of efficient plumbing fixtures, landscaping practices, and water recycling systems.
  • Indoor Environmental Quality: Focusing on creating healthy indoor environments by minimizing indoor pollutants, ensuring adequate ventilation, and promoting occupant comfort.
  • Operation, Maintenance, and Building Owner Education: Providing guidelines for ongoing building operation and maintenance practices that promote energy and resource conservation.

NGBS certification offers homeowners assurance that their homes are built or renovated according to rigorous sustainability standards, resulting in reduced environmental impact, lower utility bills, and improved indoor comfort and air quality. It also provides builders and developers with recognition for their commitment to environmentally responsible construction practices.
