Duct air leakage testing is a procedure performed to assess the efficiency of a building’s HVAC (Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning) ductwork system. Here’s a summary of the process:

  • Preparation: The HVAC system is prepared for testing by sealing off all registers, grilles, and other openings, except for one designated for the testing equipment.
  • Test Equipment Setup: A specialized duct leakage tester, which typically includes a calibrated fan and pressure gauge, is connected to the duct system through the designated opening. The fan pressurizes or depressurizes the ducts to measure airflow and detect leaks.
  • Testing Procedure: The tester applies pressure to the ductwork, either by pressurizing it with outside air or depressurizing it by extracting air from the ducts. The pressure difference between the duct system and the surrounding environment is measured to determine the amount of air leakage.
  • Data Collection: The tester measures and records the airflow rate and pressure differential at various points throughout the duct system to identify areas of leakage.
  • Analysis: The data collected during the test is analyzed to calculate the duct leakage rate, typically expressed as a percentage of the total system airflow. This leakage rate is compared to established standards and guidelines to assess the performance of the ductwork.
  • Reporting: The results of the duct air leakage test, including the leakage rate and any identified leaks, are documented in a report. Recommendations for addressing leaks and improving duct system efficiency may also be provided.
